School Asthma Improvement Recommendation
In 2006, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) released an asthma module for the
School Health Index. The School Health Index (SHI) Self-Assessment & Planning Guide
was developed by CDC in partnership with school administrators and staff, school
health experts, parents, and national nongovernmental health and education agencies
for the purpose of:
- Enabling schools to identify strengths and weaknesses of health and safety policies and programs,
- Enabling schools to
develop an action plan for improving student health, which can be incorporated into
the School Improvement Plan, and
- Engaging teachers,
parents, students, and the community in promoting health-enhancing behaviors and
better health.
We are promoting the School Health Index as a means to develop asthma management
improvement recommendations for consideration by school administrators and boards.
By working in teams, the step-by-step process of completing the School Health Index
identifies strengths and opportunities for addressing all types of community health
concerns, including asthma.
