Partnering with Parents
Children spend approximately half of their awake time at school. An asthma action
plan is the foundation for successful asthma management and good communication between
parents/guardians and school nurses. We recommend that parents/guardians meet with
school nurses to discuss the asthma action plan. In addition to keeping a copy on
file at school, copies should be given to family members, coaches, caregivers, and
others who spend time with the child.
“...The most important component of asthma management is for patients to have a
written asthma action plan that guides them to increase treatment when the asthma
flares and reduce treatment when it gets better...”

There are many options for asthma action plan forms, but we recommend using one
from the Missouri School Asthma Manual.
