Funding Opportunity Now Available to School Nurses for Improving the Lives of Children
with Asthma in Missouri
School nurses are leaders in the care of children with asthma. In addition to education,
counseling and disease monitoring services, school nurses help families navigate
a complex medical care system. To recognize the leadership of school nurses in asthma
care, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services announces the 2009 Asthma
School Nursing Award. All school nurses are encouraged to apply.(Click

Missouri School Asthma Manual Available to All School Nurses
In partnership with the University of Missouri and the Missouri School Nurses Association,
the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services developed an asthma manual
for school nurses. It contains educational materials, forms, and other items for
addressing asthma management needs in the school setting. A manual is available
for all schools. If your school does not have one, please contact us.

Success stories
Kennett Public Schools
For the past three years, school nurses from Kennett Public Schools have earned
the Asthma School Nursing Award which helped their team build capacity and systems
to better address asthma, a common health concern among their students. The prevalence
of asthma in the Kennett Public Schools is 17%. Director of Health Services Deb
Cook RN attributes their participation with Asthma School Nursing Award program
and their summer projects as an important factor in their preparation for a comprehensive,
community-based approach underway now. The new project is among 7 projects currently
funded under the Missouri Foundation for Health CALM Initiative – Childhood Asthma
Linkages in Missouri.
Richmond, Missouri
Shellie Schnelle RN was among the first school nurses recognized by the Asthma School
Nursing Award in 2006. Ms. Schnelle’s project involved training coaches near Richmond,
Missouri about the fundamentals of asthma management. The Richmond Daily News took
notice of her work and ran a story.(View article). As a result of the Asthma School
Nursing Award, each year local newspapers and radio stations help promote asthma
awareness and the support available to children from school nurses.
